What Labdoo is
Labdoo is a global non-profit initiative that collects retired notebooks, loads them with a complete learning environment and passes them on to schools and education projects that cannot afford new hardware. No sale, no middlemen: every device gets a number and can be traced all the way to the school where it ends up. We run one of the network’s drop-off points in the Bern region.

Drop it off
Announce your device by email and bring it over – one unit or whole pallets. Please include the power supply: it is the part most often missing at the destination.
Wipe the data
Before anything else happens, the drive is overwritten. Your documents, mail and stored passwords are gone before the device moves on.
Install the learning environment
The notebook receives a lean Linux with learning software and an offline library: Wikipedia, teaching material, courses. Everything runs without internet – at the destination that is usually the decisive part.
Travel
The device travels as a so-called dootrip, in the luggage of people who are on their way anyway. No freight container, hardly any extra cost, a minimal carbon footprint.
What we accept
Bring these
- Notebooks and laptops that still boot – as a rule of thumb, not older than about ten years
- Tablets and smartphones in working condition
- Power supplies, charging cables and notebook bags
- Entire device fleets from a replacement project, several pallets included
Please not these
- Devices with water damage or a broken chassis
- Desktop towers, printers and monitors
- Devices that are still locked – BIOS password, MDM enrolment or an active account
Not sure whether your device still qualifies? Ask us before you dispose of it. Whatever Labdoo cannot use, we hand over to proper recycling.
Your data does not travel along
Every drive is overwritten before the device is passed on, not merely formatted. On request we confirm the erasure in writing per serial number – the evidence you need for your data protection records. If the wipe does not complete cleanly on a device, the drive is removed and destroyed.
For companies: hardware replacement without e-waste
We replace entire device fleets on a regular basis. The old hardware does not have to end up in a shredder – it can stand in a classroom, with the paperwork to prove it.
- Recorded per serial number as part of your rollout, collection by arrangement
- Erasure certificate as evidence for your data protection records
- Donation receipt from Labdoo for your accounting
- Traceable to the receiving school – a figure you can substantiate in a sustainability report
- Documented as part of the replacement project on request

Frequently asked questions
What happens to my data?
The drive is overwritten before the device moves on. On request you receive a written erasure confirmation per serial number.
How old may a laptop be?
About ten years as a rule of thumb. What matters is not the model year but whether the device boots and comes with a power supply. When in doubt, just ask.
Does dropping off cost me anything?
No. Drop-off is free – it even saves you the disposal fee.
Where do the devices go?
To schools and education projects worldwide arranged by Labdoo. Every device carries a number you can use to follow its route on labdoo.org.
Do I get a donation receipt?
Yes, Labdoo issues a receipt for donated devices. For corporate donations we additionally record every serial number so the replacement is properly documented.
Do you also take smartphones and tablets?
Yes, as long as they work and are not locked by an account or MDM enrolment.
